Omega-3 research: Metabolism & liver

Explore what omega-3 studies tell us about metabolism & liver. Start with a specific outcome: findings for one condition do not automatically apply to another.

These summaries distinguish evidence confidence from benefit. Some questions remain unscored while full appraisal is pending.

Do omega-3 supplements prevent diabetes or meaningfully improve glucose control?

A large review of randomized trials found little or no effect on new diabetes or glucose-control measures. Lower triglycerides should not be mistaken for improved diabetes control.

No clear benefit demonstrated · 3/4 provisional confidence

Can omega-3s improve fatty liver disease?

Some studies suggest improvements in liver fat or selected enzymes. Evidence that omega-3s reverse fibrosis or prevent liver-related clinical events is not established by those changes.

Are fish-oil supplements an effective weight-loss treatment?

Trials have examined weight and body composition, but fish oil has not emerged as a reliable stand-alone weight-loss treatment. Waist measurements and body weight can give different answers.

Interpret the research

A laboratory change, symptom improvement and prevention of disease are different outcomes. Study design, formulation, dose, duration and baseline health all affect interpretation.
